A problem with an intrusion detection system is that it may generate a large number of ____
false positives
false intrusions
false detections
false negatives
False positives are when an "attack" has been recognized by an IDS based on an anomaly or a signatures pattern, when it is really not an actual attack. Such false positives bring down efficiency and may deny legitimate accesses. EDIT I would say False Negatives would also need to be correct seeing as how a false negative would mean an "attack" was allowed to pass through. The question should be changed to reflect both being the correct answer because they are BOTH problems with IDS EDIT: I don't see anything wrong with the question. IDS don't "generate" false negatives, but they generate false positives. False negatives can't be generated, it's only a term to describe undetected attacks. I think the question is asking whether you know the difference between a "False Positive" and a "False Negative" and is doing that by asking which one is generated by the IDS.
