Proper log analysis can often be used to detect security vulnerabilities. True or false?
True
False
You can view logs to see if anything unusual has happened, or something that can be potentially exploited has occurred. Log does not show vulnerablities unless threat get advantage of it. Wrong answer |@Ajay Totally Agree. Log analysis will not tell you of any security vulnerabilities. How can you do this? Skillset is verify answer and provide reference. I disagree. For example, if you see attempts from external IP to log in to root user of a box, but have supposedly have no firewall rules that allow ingress to that box, this could alert you to a potential firewall misconfiguration. So, yes, logs can alert you to vulnerabilities. {Edit:} Logs are not used often to detect security vulnerabilities - It would be the most ineffective way to find vulnerabilities, just use a vulnerability scanner. :) Believe there is an exception in the Security Log (Windows). If a user types their password into the user field mistakenly and does not notice, the password used will be identified as an unknown user event ID 4625 and the subsequent login will give up the user name that is matched to the password. Its a technicality but this is one example and would agree with above that others exist as well.
