BECN (Backward Explicit Congestion Notification) is considered as direct notification, because if congestion occurs for a frame travelling from R1 to R2, the Frame Relay switch in the middle will increase the BECN counters for R1 frames. The FECN (Forward Explicit Congestion Notification) or indirect notification will be increased for R2 for the same frame because it is being forwarded to the router R2.
