The process used to clear or sanitize hardware properly is often provided by the manufacturer in the form of a ________________. (Choose all that apply)
Hardware Sanitization Procedure (HSP)
Data Clearing Script (DCS)
Certificate of Volatility (COV)
Statement of Volatility (SOV)
Although not always easy to obtain computer hardware manufactures will typically provide a Certificate of Volatility (COV) or Statement of Volatility (SOV) which details which components of the hardware may retain data after power is removed and which will not and how to properly clear the components which are not volatile. Sometimes the COV/SOV may be available on the manufacturer's website under support documentation for the product but more often than not it must be requested. Manufacturers may not have a COV/SOV pre-made for all their products so they may need some time to have their internal experts evaluate and draft one based on your request. The best time to request a SOV/COV is prior to purchase of the hardware as the manufacturer will be motivated to respond to your request. Computer hardware that will be used to process U.S. Government classified information typically will require a COV/SOV before it can be certified to process classified information. If the manufacturer is unwilling or unable to provide a COV/SOV it may be necessary to purchase alternate hardware. EDIT - What the heck is volatility? I think it should be spelled volatility.
