What is the role of AVG (active virtual gateway) in GLBP?
None of these
The AVG replies to all ARP requests for the virtual IP address.
The AVG responds to all DHCP requests from hosts.
The AVG serves as the default gateway for all hosts.
GLBP (Gateway Load Balancing Protocol) achieves load balancing by passing traffic from different hosts through different routers. The AVG replies to all ARP Requests for the virtual IP address from all hosts. Each router has its own virtual MAC address. The AVG replies to some ARP Requests with the virtual MAC address of one router and some with the virtual MAC address of another router. As a result, different hosts have virtual MAC addresses of different routers mapped to the same virtual IP address. The end result is that different hosts send frames to different routers despite the fact that all hosts have the default gateway set to the virtual IP address. The AVG does not act as the default gateway for all hosts because that would mean no load balancing.
