'Tort law' is a subset of which of the following categories?
None of the above
Administrative law
Privacy law
Criminal law
Civil law
[edit: i agree with this new answer. Tort is not another word for civil law; it is a subset] The correct answer is 'Civil law'. This question should be removed, as none of the answers are correct and it makes no sense. Tort law is one field of US civil law, including things like civil suits for:
negligence assault battery conversion fraud trespass intentional infliction of emotional distress defamation/libel/slander
But there are many other areas of civil law which do not involve torts. Suits based in breach of contract are not torts. A petition in the federal courts for bankruptcy relief under chapters 13 or 7 is not a tort action. When a landlord sues a tenant who hasn't paid their rent and asks for them to be evicted, this is not a tort. Matters in probate court concerning wills, gaurdianships or conservatorships are not torts. Filing a petition before a judge for a domestic violence protection order is not a tort. A suit for dissolution of marriage is not a tort. All of these things however are "civil" law, because all civil law really means in the US is that we're talking about actions in court that do not involve criminal prosecution under the criminal code by a government prosecutor.
