The US Privacy Act was created to protect data for US citizens. The HITECH Act deals with HIPAA. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act protects government, financial, and foreign or interstate commerce computers resulting in aggregate damages of $5000+ annually. The Patriot Act weakened the ECPA to allow for search and seizure without disclosure and lessening judicial oversight for electronic monitoring. The Identity Theft Enforcement and Restitution Act of 2008 amended the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to remove the $5000 damage requirement and make the theft a felony if 10 or more computers were involved.
