Hierarchical Design includes three layers, Access Layer, Distribution Layer, and Core Layer. The Access Layer provides workgroup/user access to network. Sometimes it may also referred to as the Desktop Layer. This layer interfaces with end devices such as PC, printers and IP Phones, or even Routers, Switches, Hubs and Wireless Access Points (AP). Some features include PoE, Port Security, VLANs, QoS, Spanning Tree, and Link Aggregation. The Distribution Layer provides aggregation of Data received from Access Layer. Some features of Distribution Layer are also found in Access Layer, but for Distribution Layer specific features, it includes Layer 3 Support, Redundancy and Load Balancing, and Broadcast Domain Control. The Core Layer or sometimes referred to as Backbone Layer provides features such as high-speed switching, reliability/fault tolerance, and high-end network devices such as 6500/6800 Cisco Catalyst switches.
