While performing a preventative maintenance review at a data center, adequate maintenance has been demonstrated on all components of the data center. In addition, the most critical activity that the IT auditor should also assess is that the company:
Performs maintenance during noncritical processing times.
Escort service personnel at all times while work is being performed.
Independently verifies that maintenance is being performed.
perform background checks on all service personnel.
The biggest risk to normal operations in a data center would be if an incident or mishap were to happen during critical peak processing times; therefore, it would be prudent to ensure that no type of system maintenance be performed at these critical times. While the trustworthiness of the service personnel is important, it is normal practice for these individuals to be escorted and supervised by the data center personnel. It is also expected that the service provider would perform this background check, not the customer. Escorting service personnel is common and a best practice, but the greater risk in this case would be if work were performed during critical processing. It is possible that the service provider is performing inadequate maintenance, and therefore this issue may need to be investigated; however, the bigger risk is maintenance being performed at critical processing times.
