Welcome to our trusted computing base module. A trusted computing base, or TCB, is a total combination of protection mechanisms within a computer system. The TCB will enforce the security policy of the system and ensure that it is not violated. The TCB is a combination of hardware, software, and firmware, all working together to enforce your computer security policy and increase the security of your system.
Typically when we are using a trusted computing base, we will have a security perimeter that separates our TCB from any other objects that are not part of our trusted computing base. As you can see in the picture below, we have a trusted computing base local area network, which has our trusted system of hardware, software, and firmware.
We then have an interface that separates that TCB from any non-trustworthy hardware, software, and firmware. And you can see that security perimeter that separates the trusted computing base, keeping everything that is considered very secure from leaking in to a non-secure system. For the CISSP examination, you should remember that we use a security perimeter to separate our trusted computing base from any non-trusted components.
