A client is using a web browser to request information to a Web Server, since this web browsers IP address is in a remote network, the client needs to send the packets to its default gateway. The client learned the IP of the default gateway but doesnt know the hardware address of the gateways interface. What protocol is used to find the hardware address to be placed in the frame?
ARP
DHCP
RARP
DNS
ICMP
HTTP
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) finds the Hardware Address of a host from a known IP address. When a client has an IP datagram to send and it doesn't have the destination device's hardware address in the ARP cache, it uses ARP messages to find such information. After that, the client will store the ARP mapping in the ARP local table. RARP (Reverse Address Resolution Protocol) finds the IP address of a device with the hardware address. In the scenario above, the client recorded the IP of the gateway though DHCP. The host is using HTTP for web browsing and has already sent a DNS request for resolving the domain of the web page. Next it is the responsibility of ARP to get the MAC of the gateway to transmit the packets within its LAN. ICMP is not being used in this scenario.
