How is the smurf attack initiated?
The attacker sends broadcast message with a spoofed IP address.
The attacker executes finger command on the server.
The attacker sends ping to a host in our network.
The attacker performs telnet to a host in our domain.
The Smurf Attack is a distributed denial-of-service attack in which large numbers of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets with the intended victim's spoofed source IP are broadcast to a computer network using an IP Broadcast address. EDIT: A "Legal" IP address? That doesn't even make since. Consider changing to "Spoofed" IP address considering that is exactly how the attack works. EDIT: Made the change.
