Harriet has 3 projects, with the following conditions: Project 1 _ CPI=.7 & SPI =.8 and is in Closing phase of project Project 2- CPI=1.1 & SPI=.9 and is in Execution phase of project Project 3 _ CPI= 1.0 & SPI=1.0 and is in Planning phase of project Which of her projects will she most likely not be able to change the outcome?
Project 2
Project 3
All of these
Project 1
Let's first look at the definition of Schedule Performance Index and Cost Performance Index; A value >1 shows ahead of planned schedule and under planned cost, a value<1.0 is behind planned schedule and over budgeted cost, and a value=1.0 is on planned schedule and on planned cost. Project 1 is correct as in closing phase of project you have the least opportunity to change the outcome. Project 2 is incorrect as CPI is under planned cost but SPI is behind schedule. While in execution phase there are opportunities to make up on schedule losses especially if under planned cost. Project 3 is incorrect as both parameters are on schedule and cost so there is no need to make course correction changes. All of these is incorrect as only Project 1 is meets critieria for least likely to modify outcome. (PMBOK 2013 Rev 5th Edition, pgs 217-225).
